Describe 2 highlights that caught your attention in our readings or discussions for this week. Why was it significant for you?
One thing that caught my attention was some of the different search techniques. Using AND, OR, and NOT is extremely useful and I think I use it sometimes, but nearly as much as I should. I will be working on improving my searching and also helping the students since many of them really don't know what key words to use when searching.
The other topic that caught my attention was when we were discussing if we really needed any print resources in our reference section. Even thought it's easy to say that everything can be found online or in databases, it is not always possible for students and teachers to get to a computer. Students can check out reference books from the library so if they don't have a computer at home they can do research from a book. Teachers are able to check out reference materials and take to their classroom. i think it is valuable to evaluate the materials in the reference section, make teachers aware of what is there, and discard what is not used.
What do you think about the Big 6?
I think the Big 6 is great. It's a wonderful framework to help student find information. I do think an entire district would have to be onboard in order to make the Big 6 really work how it should. It is something I will bring up in our library meeting to see how the other librarians feel about it, but currently as a district were doing several other programs district wide so I don't know if we're ready for another one yet.
Are you pretty comfortable doing a Reference Interview?
Yes, I feel comfortable doing a Reference Interview and I feel like I am able to help my patrons out. Since starting in November I feel like students are really beginning to feel comfortable with me and trust me in asking questions. Teachers come to me frequently and I try to not only help them, but also follow up with them to make sure things went well for them, did they have any other questions, etc.
How is the Internet Log coming? Questions/concerns?
I think it's going great. I'm doing Web 2.0 Tools which is what my staff is very interested in, so I will be able to use it right away.
Questions about your Online Database Presentation or your Library Lesson? What is your topic?
No questions. I am doing Culture Grams in conjuction with Katelyn. They have recently upgraded some of their features, so I've been having a good time exploring those.
vi.(Louis Question) – How has our class and this week’s activities effected you in your professional life? Discuss two things that you have learned about this week.
One way that this class has effected me is in the way I do my reference interviews. I have worked hard on always finding a solution for the patron. I am not always able to give them exactly what they want, but I am able to help them find something that fits their needs.
Two things I learned in class:
1. There are lot more ways to search for information than I ever imagined.
2. Reference is extremely valuable and I need to think about where I want i it placed in my library and how I want to go about letting the staff
know what is in the library.

Describe 2 ideas that were brought up in the Article #3 discussions. How can you relate this information to your professional life?
1. I reflected quite a bit on Jenny's article. I think we need to do a better job in our profession of explaining the purpose of programs because students are just getting information without meaning. I also think student need to learn where to go for information and the internet has not helped this. Everyone goes to google when that is not always the best place to go. It is my job along with the teachers to explain where the best place to get information is for a given assignment and then to explain to them why that is the best place to go. This is the same when using programs, explain to the students why we are using this program over a different program.
2. MaryAnn brought up some great apps for the classroom and the idea of adding these to our library websites was brought up. I think over the summer I am going to work on getting an app list added to my website so that parent, students, and teachers have access to apps that may apply to them.
Describe 2 highlights that caught your attention in our readings or discussions for this week. Why was it significant for you?
1. When reading the text for this week I learned a lot about the reference interview. Since I am the only librarian, like most of you, we truly are the reference libertarian as well as everything else in the library. One main point I took away is that every patron should leave feeling good. I should either be able to help them with the problem or give them another avenue to find the solution.
2. Looking at library instruction was another topic that I learned a great deal about. The text discussed how you could get each teacher in your library enough so that students were learning the skills that they need. I have thought a lot about this and it is on my end-of-the-year list to discuss with my principal. Since we have houses in the middle school it helps make things a bit easier to see all of the students. All I really need is one teacher per house to be willing to work with me and I see all of the students. I would like to have specific internet safety, research, and copyright information that is given out to students in each grade so that they are all learning the correct information and then can use that throughout the rest of the school year.
How is the Internet Log coming? Questions/concerns?
The Internet Log is coming along well. I'm continuing to find and develop my log on Web 2.0 Tools.
Questions about your Online Database Presentation or your Library Lesson?
I have chosen my database - CultureGrams. I have used this database when I was a social studies teacher, but I was never formally trained by anyone. Since becoming the LMS I have learned so much more about this database and think it is just great.
(Louis Question) – How has our class and this week’s activities effected you in your professional life? Discuss two things that you have learned about this week.
1. I learned how important it is to listen to your patrons and what their true needs are, and sometimes this means asking them several questions so that you can figure out what it is that they need. I need to be patient and as helpful as I can to everyone that walks through the door.
2. I have also learned that reference is so different from library to library, but that in general most reference sections, in particular the reference books are rarely used. Because of this I have started to weed my books, inviting teachers to take a look at books that they may have use for in their classroom and getting rid of books that don't link up with any curriculum. I am planning on really revamping the reference in my library and hopefully for the better.

a. Describe 2 ideas that were brought up in the Article #2 discussions. How can you relate this information to your professional life?
I thought that Mary Ann brought up a good point in her article when she talked about what employers were looking at. She stated that study skills/research classes were something that were created to help students create collaborative skills. I thought that this is a great idea and could be used in my school. I get to give study/research skills to the students that come in to the library, but it's very hit and miss, so I feel like some students miss out on research skills.
I related to what Megan had to say about her article in reference to the challenge of getting non-technology user to want to learn about technology. There are some teachers in my building that refuse to try anything and it's very frustrating. I'm trying to nudge people in to trying things by saying I'll lead and they can follow. After I do it 5 times in a row for their classes my feeling is they'll feel a bit more comfortable with the technology. But I do find that it's like pulling teeth to get some teachers to jump on the tech bandwagon.
b. Describe 2 highlights that caught your attention in our readings for this week. Why was it significant for you?
The reading for this week helpful in that it really pointed out the goals of a library media specialist. One part I really thought was important was when it talked about the skills that a 21st century learner should have. Students should be using their critical thinking skills, inquiry, they should create new knowledge, work in teams, etc. I know that this is so true, but I don't always see this happening in our building.
The 21st century learning skills broke off in to the "Big 6" and I found these really interesting. I had no heard of this before, but I really like the logic behind it and it does seem like a very simple and straight forward way to have students find the best information. I think I am going to look hard at the Big Six and think about maybe bringing this up as a research skill that should be used in our building. If I can't get the whole school on board, I will definitely be using this with the classes that come in the library that I am able to teach research skills to.
c. How is the Internet Log coming? Questions/concerns?
My internet log is coming along well. I have decided to focus on Web 2.0 tools because that is what seems to be in demand from the teachers who want to be involved in technology. It's been fun finding new sites and tools.
d. Library Visit Questions?
None
e. Questions about your Online Database Presentation or your Library Lesson?
I don't think I have any questions right now. I know that we can do it with a partner if we would like and that we should pick a database that we enjoy. I have a few that I'm thinking about and will make a final decision soon.
f. (Louis Question) – How has our class and this week’s activities effected you in your professional life? Discuss two things that you have learned about this week.
One thing that I learned this week that I have used right away was google wonderwheel. Students use google to do their searches and this at least give the students a more organized way to search. I really think it is a helpful tool and will be sharing it with my staff next week.
I also learned that reference is so unique and hard to deal with. Reference is needed, but in what format? How do you shelf reference books so that they make sense and that patrons know where they are located. Is it worth keeping things that aren't used? Could they be used somewhere else? Just a lot of questions were brought up and I'm doing a lot of thinking on where I'm going with my reference section.
