How has our class and this week’s activities effected you in your professional life? Discuss two things that you have learned about this week.

This week's activities have effected my professional life greatly. I attended WEMTA and was able to gain a great deal of information and new knowledge that I am able to share with my staff and the students.

I have also gained a great deal from the peers in my class. I thought Megan's presenation on proper e-mail was great. I thought Katelyn and Mary Ann's lessons wwew really inforamtive to students when using reference materials. The screen casts by Dan and Jenny were great. Stacey had a great idea for showing kids genres. And I liked how Brian used a free encyclopedia to show students how to better search and included a web 2.0 tool in with it.

Describe 2 highlights that caught your attention during the Online Database presentations.

1. I really though Alycea's information on Tumble Books was good. I know that the elementary schools in my district use Tumble Books, but the middle school does not. I think I'll take a look at the graphic novels for lower level reading students if I can get the information through Mead Public Library.

2. I liked Brian's review of BrainPop. I have used BrainPop in the social studies classroom when I taught and I loved it. Our district does not purchase this, but we just talked about possibly purchasing it at the last meeting that we had. I think it is a good tool for students and teachers in both the elemantary and middle school.

I thought all of the databases were really interesting. I thought that Mary Ann's was really neat for people wanted to learn different languages and I though Stacey had a great resource for current/sensitive topics.

(Louis Question) - How has our class and this week’s activities effected you in your professional life? Discuss two things that you have learned about this week.

1. This weeks class has helped me realize the importance of the classmates I have. I learn so much from everyone in this class each week. The databases and resources that are shared are great.

2. I really would like to look more in to a couple of the databases that were shared, especially the foreign language one shared by Mary Ann and I would also like to look in to the cost of Brain Pop.

Describe 2 highlights that caught your attention in our readings or discussions for this week. Why were these significant for you?

1. In the reading it discusses planning for the future. I think this is important when it comes to reference. The books are expensive and often times a great portion can be found in databases, so it is important to think through purchases.

2. The other point that was taken was that if information is outdated or wrong it must be weeded. I have gone through my library and taken several items out that are just not current anymore. (Many of these being health/technology books)

What are your thoughts about the tools provided by DPI for library media programs? Were you aware of these? Which things do you see as most valuable to you?

I think that these are excellent tools. I didn't know about them before this, so I'm glad we were able to see these tonight. It's just good to know that they are out there if we need them.

What are your thoughts, concerns and questions about library program evaluations?

I think the evalutations are excellent. In general I think that the evaluations had items that were very important. It also made me think about who and when my clerk will be evaluated, and that it might be a good idea to do an informal evaluation with her two or three times a year. Also, I'm assuming that I will be evaluated every three years like I have been, but we'll see if I get skipped over or not.

Questions about your Online Database Presentation or your Library Lesson? What is your topic?

I think you answered all of my questions in class. Topic is CultureGrams.

(Louis Question) – How has our class and this week’s activities effected you in your professional life? Discuss two things that you have learned about this week.

1. I went through my reference section and weeded a good portion. I also moved the whole section to an area that I felt made more sense for the students and teachers. Learning about reference in class has really helped me feel that reference isn't so overwhelming.

2. I e-maile out my web 2.0 internet log and had positive feedback on it. I am also searching through each of your logs and starting to develop internet logs for each of the content areas in my school

Weekly Blogger Reflection (Reflect on the following questions.)

Describe 2 highlights that caught your attention in our readings or discussions for this week. Why was it significant for you?

1. One thing that I "stumbled" upon while we were viewing search engines was SweetSearch. This is a search engine developed by educators and libriarians that is run through Google. The more I played with this search engine the more I liked it. I think it has some great potential with my middle school students. I hope to use this in the future.

2. I thought it was very interesting to learn about all the different things that google can do. I didn't realize it was a calculator, a dictionary, and that I could search movies, weather, flights, etc. I'm sure that I will be taking advantage of many of these tools.

What are your thoughts about the search engines we discussed?

I thought many of the search engines are great. I really like Boolify. I think it makes searching much easier for the students because of the manipulatives. I also like Quintero. This search engine reminded me of google wonderwheel, however it developed a word cloud instead of a wheel. I thought that this search engine was really user-friendly.

How do you feel about Google Advanced Search techniques?

I think that Google Advanced Search techniques are extremely helpful. I know that I will be using them probably on a daily basis to help students and staff find information.

Do you think you’d use Scavenger Hunts with your students? Why or why not?

Yes, I think I would use a Scavenger Hunt. I think it is an easy and fun way to find out how much students know or how much they learned. I like the idea of having some students look the information up online and others look it up in the refrence section to see which group completes first. I think it would be eye-opening for students to see how easy it really is to find information in a book.

Questions about your Online Database Presentation or your Library Lesson? What is database and what is your lesson topic?

My database assignment will be on CultureGrams and it is coming along well. My Library Lesson will be an introduction to the PVMS Library. I will be making this lesson to use at the beginning of next year since I was not there this year. I have the framework for what I want to do and need to work on getting the details finished.

(Louis Question) – How has our class and this week’s activities effected you in your professional life? Discuss two things that you have learned about this week.

1. I have continued to learn about what beign a refrence librarian is. With that, I have continued to work on my skills in asking appropriate questions and trying to help all of the students and staff to the best of my ability.

2. We often talk about PLN's in class and this week the Mukwonago Librarians held their first Focus Group of librarians from our surrounding area. It was a really great meeting with about 25 librarians and we were able to share ideas on the good things going on in our libraries. Everyone seemed to really enjoy it and we are planning on doing another one in May, with Waterford hosting.
